Bettina, Living with Parkinson's Since 2007

(BETTINA)

Hello, I'm Bettina, and I'm 48 years old and I've had Parkinson's for 14 years, although you probably couldn't tell.

(BETTINA)

He took me to all these shows all over the world, air shows, and I made it then my business. I wrote for Aviation Week magazine, then I transitioned into working for PR, covering Rotary Wings or helicopter programs for a corporation. And then finally I moved to a company doing marketing for their federal and defense business.

It was a long road to my Parkinson's diagnosis.

(DESCRIPTION)

I was 34 years old, and I noticed a twitch, a spasm in my finger that wouldn't go away. So, I thought, well, maybe it's the mouse I'm using, so I went to see my doctor, who said, well, maybe it's carpal tunnel. So, he referred me to an orthopedist and the orthopedist referred me to his buddy, the neurologist, who said, there's no way you can have Parkinson's, you're too young. So, he then sent me to an ophthalmologist. And finally, my acupuncturist at the time told me I needed to press for a diagnosis, and she advised me to go to the National Institutes of Health, where finally, a few months later, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

(DESCRIPTION)

(BETTINA)

Parkinson's has had the most profound effect on my work life. I've had to make adjustments throughout the years. In the beginning you couldn't even tell I had Parkinson's and I was feeling pretty good most of the time, so I didn't change anything.

(DESCRIPTION)

(BETTINA)

And then through the years, especially as a journalist, I traveled 180 days a year, which was just way too much. I've been very, very lucky. I count my lucky stars every day that any job I've had, I've always been, people have always known that I had Parkinson's, I never had to hide it. And for that reason, I think people have always been very generous with their support, with their help.

(BETTINA)

The friends I have I rely on is such a wonderful community of friends and family. And in the past few years also, I've developed very close friendships with newly diagnosed Parkinson's patients. As someone who's had it for 14 years, I'm kind of the godfather of Parkinson's among the women that I know and to form some lasting friendships and support there as well.

(BETTINA)

Even though I take carbidopa/levodopa for Parkinson's, there are times of day when it doesn't always works 100 percent. And those are considered my off periods. And for me, they're very marked. They're not the same for everybody. For me, you can really tell when I'm on like now or when I'm off, like shufflilng and slow. I get dystonia, so real stiff and tremors, the tremors are the worst, they just make functioning very difficult for me. I typically experience a return of symptoms twice a day, late in the morning and early evening, late afternoon, especially if I've had a long day. Because I know I was experiencing a return of symptoms, I did some research and discovered INBRIJA and talked to my doctor. He asked me to come in and have an appointment to discuss taking it.

INBRIJA® (levodopa inhalation powder, 42 mg capsules)

INBRIJA is a prescription medicine used when needed for OFF episodes in adults with Parkinson's treated with regular carbidopa/levodopa medicine.

Do not use INBRIJA if you take or have taken a nonselective monoamine oxidase inhibitor such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine within the last 2 weeks.

(BETTINA)

I always encourage others to take an active role in managing their condition. There's always something you can do, which is why my doctor recommended INBRIJA. Once I use INBRIJA, I notice it begins to work for me in about 15 minutes.
